Property Trends in Melbourne - New York Style

September 08, 2015

There’s something about the New York lifestyle that is extremely appealing to the culturally rich millennials of Melbourne. New York is famous for it’s Manhattan skyline, it’s fashionable ‘sex and the city’ nightlife, hip-hop subway culture and celebrity lifestyle. Also famous for it’s street-food trucks on every corner, rooftop bars and street art - Melbourne is now taking these elements to fame on our very own streets.

Another iconic New York symbol in its own right is the warehouse apartment. Originally built as former industrial buildings, open-plan loft style apartments became popular in Manhattans meatpacking district by Artists as a living/working studio space. These beautiful old spaces are now highly sought-after, and the gentrification of such apartments in large cities such as Melbourne is a familiar pattern. Many property developers are listening to the next generation of home owners and it seems to be that New York style apartments is what they are asking for. Projects such as MoPo (Moonee Ponds), York st (Prahran), The Bowery (Richmond) and Manhattan (Toorak) all take direct influences from the classic New York loft apartment - and are selling like crazy.

We love the cultural influences Melbourne is sharing with New York - both artistically and architecturally. We hope the loft-style apartment trend will stick around as it speaks for really beautiful designs. Stay tuned as we continue to explore the next big trends in Melbourne.
