Back to the Future Brand Realities

October 20, 2015

In 1989, household names Marty Mcfly and his nutty scientist Dr Emmett Brown set their time travel date forward to October 21, 2015. Yep that’s today! The movie made a few predictions for what technology could bring to our world, some utterly crazy and some creepily accurate... For all of those Back To The Future fans out there, we took a quick look at some of the brands that have made these predictions come true.

In the 2015 time trip of Back To The Future 2 we see teenagers get around on technicolored fluro flame-spitting hover boards. Only a few months ago, luxury car brand Lexus released a teaser video for the prototype of the SLIDE, a stylish modern real-life hoverboard. Although the ride looks smooth and appealing, the clever team behind the campaign have tricked us all into thinking the SLIDE is a smooth ride over concrete playgrounds. However as the prototype relies on a scientific system of conductors and magnets, the team had to build an entire park of steel for the prototype to actually work.

Video Calls

The idea of this may seem normal to us now, but back in 1989 the concept was merely just that - a concept. Today we have Skype, Apple, Google, Snapchat and a plethora of brands to thank for this technology dream becoming an everyday reality.

While the fashion trends from the Back To The Future films are iconically 80s, there are a number of high fashion brands today that are taking inspiration from the movies futuristic predictions. Brands such as Balenciaga and Pedro Lourenco are embracing colour blocking, boxy jackets and metallic moto jackets seen throughout the cult film.
