Muppets Partner with American Express for Small Business Saturday

December 01, 2015

For a holiday that was once supposed to be all about celebrating giving thanks for the harvest and of the preceding year, thanksgiving has surely lost all of its values. The holiday is now all about consumerism, with the huge shopping sales of Black Friday and now the following Cyber Monday. Sales are now starting weeks before the holiday and stores that were once opening at 6am are now reported to be opening at 5 or even 4am. In 2011, retailers such as Target and Macy’s took it to extremes when they opened their retail doors at midnight. Many stores are open all day on the Thanksgiving holiday, forcing staff members to give up family celebrations for working to contribute to the $630.5 billion sales.

With all of these huge retailers sales and crazy shopping hours, how are small business owners supposed to compete? American Express came up with the solution in 2010 - Small business Saturday, a day dedicated to “helping small businesses do more business. Because when small businesses thrive, communities thrive, too.” Helping Small businesses has been a longstanding brand commitment of American Express for many many years.

This year over 350 partners are helping to support the event and our favourite porky feminist, alongside her fuzzy muppet entourage, is just one of them. Another partner is Rachel Schechtman of New Yorks STORY “living magazine” concept store, who is showcasing only independent retailers as part of the #smallbizsaturday initiative. Online accessories retailer Lesouque is hosting their own “break up with Black Friday” campaign by completely closing down its online store for the day.

Thankfully, Black Friday madness hasn’t hit Australian shores yet, but our boxing day sales are close competition to the consumer crazy holiday. We would love to see Australian brands taking a leaf from these #smallbizsaturday partners and paving the way for local business support around the silly season.
